SHOWS WORTH NOTING FOR MARCH 23-29

Sunday 3/24

The Academy Awards (ABC, 8 p.m.): The race is on, with Whoopi Goldberg hosting for the fourth time. The special event features a performance from Cirque du Soleil, and Robert Redford and Sidney Poitier will receive honorary awards.

Monday 3/25

A Death in the Family (PBS, 9-10:30 p.m.): Masterpiece Theatre's American Collection presents a poignant retelling of James Agee's memorial to his father, a man of rare goodness. The death of this dear man haunted Agee his whole life. Annabeth Gish stars with John Slattery. Young Austin Wolff as Rufus (Agee's alter ego) is convincing as his dad's best friend in their innocent conspiracies to resist his mother's more rigid rules.

Wednesday 3/27

George Lopez (ABC, 8:30-9 p.m.): Stand-up comic Lopez stars as a family man who has just been promoted to manager of a Los Angeles airplane factory. A beautiful wife, darling children, and an impossible mother set the routine. Awkward as it is, it can be quite funny.

Greg the Bunny (Fox, 9:30-10 p.m.): Puppet Greg lands a role on a children's program where the puppets have lives of their own. But there is no point to this show. It's too crude for children, and there's something deranged about using toys to tell vulgar jokes.

Thursday 3/28

Testing Our Schools (PBS, 9-10 p.m.): "Frontline" examines the controversy over standardized testing in public schools. President Bush's education-reform bill is his priority on the domestic front. But does the model of standardized learning and teaching work? Many teachers object.

Friday 3/29

AFP: American Fighter Pilot (CBS, 8-9 p.m.): This newest in the line of "reality" TV shows follows three men as they train to become F-15 fighter pilots. One struggles with his Christian conscience about learning to kill; one is a rebel, defying regulations; and another is a family man who finds he has less time for his family.
