CAMBRIDGE, ENGLAND — One of the largest university scholarships programs was announced by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the University of Cambridge.
The foundation has set up a $210 million trust that will run in perpetuity and grant gifted graduate students the opportunity to study at Cambridge. There will be 225 Gates Cambridge Scholars in residence at any one time.
Graduate students from countries outside the United Kingdom can apply now for scholarships for 2001; all costs, including tuition, room and board, and travel, will be covered.
The scholarships are for one to three years, with the possible extension of a fourth year, and will be awarded on the basis of intellectual abilities, leadership capacity, and commitment to contributing to the benefit of society throughout the world.
The benefaction is the largest single sum that Cambridge has received.
Students can apply at www.gates. scholarships.cam.ac.uk.
