News In Brief

DON'T EXPECT ANY THANKS

The call from authorities informed Charles and Pam Ward that their stolen car - the one whose engine he so lovingly cared for - had been recovered. But did the news make the Glasgow, Scotland, couple happy? No, and not just because each has a replacement set of wheels. You see, the vehicle disappeared in 1975 and didn't turn up until workers for British Waterway's Millennium Link Project drained one of the city's canals. "It was," said Charles, "basically holes surrounded by pieces of metal."

THE FRISBEE IS ALREADY IN

It's too late to get your nominations to the National Toy Hall of Fame for this year's class of inductees. The facility in Salem, Ore., home of A.C. Gilbert, inventor of the Erector Set, has made its choices from a field of 34 candidates. The winners - Mr. Potato Head, the Slinky, jacks, the bicycle, and the jump rope - are to be enshrined this fall. Beanie Babies and the cap pistol, among others, didn't make the cut.
