Contented cattle

Call him the "cattle whisperer."

Handler Bud Williams's uncanny ability to connect with cattle is attracting the attention of beef producers eager to ease public concern over perceived inhumane treatment.

"What I've tried to do is study what animals want and how they react to us," says Mr. Williams, whose low-stress approach to herd management is converting ranchers.

Though critics suggest the very nature of the beef industry precludes it from becoming humane, Williams is hoping collaboration with industry leaders will result in more free-range cattle ranches that embrace sustainable agriculture.
