Festive party potion

Several readers have asked for a recipe for a tasty nonalcoholic drink to serve at holiday parties. Jane Brandt recommends this one from her new cookbook, "Drinks Without Alcohol" (Workman Publishing, $7.95).

Orange Nog Supreme

2 quarts orange juice

1/2 cup fresh lemon juice

6 very fresh large eggs

1/4 cup sugar

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

1/4 teaspoon ground ginger

Grated nutmeg

1 quart vanilla ice cream

1 quart ginger ale, chilled

Place half of the orange and lemon juices, 3 of the eggs, 2 tablespoons of the sugar, and 1/8 teaspoon each of the cinnamon, cloves, and ginger in a blender and blend on medium speed until smooth, about 30 seconds. Pour into large container.

Repeat with other half of ingredients, adding a pinch of nutmeg. Combine the two batches, cover the container, and refrigerate.

Just before serving, place ice cream and ginger ale in a large punch bowl. Break up ice cream into chunks. Then use a whisk to blend the ice cream and ginger ale until well mixed. Add the refrigerated ingredients and continue beating until well blended. Sprinkle with a bit more nutmeg and serve. Makes 24 punch-cup servings.
