What's On TV

TV highlights for the week of Oct. 30-Nov. 6. Shows listed are not necessarily recommended by the Monitor. All times are Eastern; check local listings.

SATURDAY 10/31

PGA Tour Championship (ABC, 1:30-3:30 p.m.): The top 30 money leaders on the PGA Tour will tee off at the season-ending championship. Sunday coverage starts at 3 p.m.

SUNDAY 11/1

National Football League (Fox, 4:15-7 p.m.): With the season halfway through, two marquee teams face off: The Green Bay Packers host the Francisco 49ers.

Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island (Cartoon Network, 8-10 p.m.): Zoinks! The mystery gang is back for a new adventure on a spooky island, where they investigate a haunted house on a Louisiana Bayou. During their sleuthing, Daphne, Fred, Scooby, Shaggy, and Velma encounter creepy characters: a ghost pirate, a ghostly civil war soldier, and an island crawling with zombies. Like, wow, this mystery is nostalgic fun. (TV-G)

American Buffalo: Spirit of a Nation (PBS, 8-9 p.m.): This poignant program examines the near-extermination and the remarkable resurgence of the buffalo in the Great Plains and illustrates how it affects the spiritual, cultural, and economic lives of American Indians. The program features footage of protected herds in Yellowstone Park and interviews with native Americans, who believe that saving the buffalo means saving themselves. (TV-PG)

MONDAY 11/2

Cats (PBS, 9-11 p.m.): Frame after frame, the camera gets up-close on the action - you can see the whiskers and sense the purrs. But when these images substitute for the big picture, the small-screen presentation sacrifices some of the energy and motion of the stage production. For those who've seen "Cats" on the stage, this version featuring the original cast offers much in the way of memories. For everyone else, it's a good introduction to Andrew Lloyd Webber's interpretation of T.S. Eliot's "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats."

Becker (CBS, 9:30-10 p.m.): Ted Danson plays a good-hearted, conscientious doctor whose bedside manner is closer in temperament to Atilla the Hun than Dr. Kildare. He raises the comic insult to an art, lambasting everyone with his wit - sometimes overstepping propriety and good taste. Serious subjects underlie the humor and may not appeal to some.

TUESDAY 11/3

Election Coverage (Fox News Channel, 7-8 p.m.): Will President Clinton's possible impeachment affect American voters as they go to the polls? Political analysts try to answer this question in this special that focuses on races for the Senate, the House of Representatives, and 36 governorships. Check local listings for more coverage at 10 p.m. on many other channels.

WEDNESDAY 11/4

The Living Edens - Madagascar, a World Apart (PBS, 8-9 p.m.): Maya Angelou guides viewers in a journey through this enchanting African island, home to species seen nowhere else. The excellent camera work will delight. Don't miss the swinging lemurs. (TV-G)
