An Original Healing Resource

Bringing a spiritual perspective to daily life

Have you ever had difficulty reconciling a God of love with all the pain, evil, and suffering you see around you? Have you ever asked or heard people ask, "Why does God allow such terrible things to happen?"

Open the textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy, and you'll discover a concept of God you might not be familiar with. A God who is the source, origin, foundation, and power of the universe, who has only good for you, and gives an infinite supply of it!

In spite of everything the five senses may tell you, the God who created you is wholly good. Consider this definition of Him: "The great I am; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence" (Science and Health, Pg. 587). That does not include evil of any kind!

Did you know that you have an unbreakable relationship to this Supreme Being? Because of this connectedness, you are linked with the most powerful force in the universe. No human circumstance can break it. You need never feel abandoned, afraid, or lonely again when you understand this.

Yes, God loves you. But you have to be willing to accept the fact. You might discover some more things about yourself in the process. For instance, your real identity is wholly spiritual - that is, not limited or defined by materiality. That means that you are not mortal. Mortality cannot be part of your spiritual identity.

You are not a born sinner! God has made you perfect, His exact likeness. Sin signifies separation from God. But Science and Health says, "Spiritual man [and woman] is the image or idea of God, an idea which cannot be lost nor separated from its divine Principle" (Pg. 303).

These are just a few of the truths you will discover in Science and Health. Knowing the truth and accepting it bring healing - the revealing of who you really are. I think of the Christ Science as original because it has always been true. It enables you to cast out fear, dispel ignorance, and claim the good promised to you in Scripture: "Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine" (Luke 15:31).

Mrs. Eddy discovered the divine laws of Life, Truth, and Love in 1866. She called her discovery Christian Science. These laws had always existed, but humanity had lost sight of them. Christ Jesus healed, through prayer, in obedience to these laws. Eddy proved that understanding what Jesus taught results in healing. Christian Science has reinstated primitive Christian healing - healing through scientific prayer. Such prayer, based on the spiritual understanding that God governs all, maintains the activity of the body, its functions and actions, and brings about peace and contentment.

I have felt the benefits of this kind of prayer. For many years, I was extremely sensitive. I overreacted to unkind remarks, criticism, and negative behavior of other people. I would get upset and feel pain in my chest.

I read in Science and Health, "Trials teach mortals not to lean on a material staff, - a broken reed, which pierces the heart" (Pg. 66). I saw I had been leaning too heavily on other people for my happiness; figuratively speaking, I was "taking things to heart." I decided right then to lean more heavily on God for my happiness. Later, I read, "The wintry blasts of earth may uproot the flowers of affection, and scatter them to the winds; but this severance of fleshly ties serves to unite thought more closely to God, for Love supports the struggling heart until it ceases to sigh over the world and begins to unfold its wings for heaven" (Pg. 57). This did stir my thought. And I was healed physically.

The quality of our life is determined by our quality of thought. The discernment of spiritual reality enlightens and purifies consciousness, and healing naturally follows.
