Science and Health -- Key to the Kingdom

Bringing a spiritual perspective to world events and daily life.

If you've never read it before, you just might find a wonderful gift in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. This book was written by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer of Christian Science, in 1875. It can open for you the doors of thought to a new world -- the world of God, whose kingdom Christ Jesus taught is "within" us (Luke 17:21). A friend of mine once told me that when he started to read Science and Health for the first time, it turned him upside down. He said it made him rethink everything he had come to accept as true. It made the Bible come alive to him -- so much so that its words glowed with new meaning.

Similarly, the one thing that has promoted growth and progress in my own life has been the ideas in Science and Health. This book is to me not only "key to the Scriptures" but also key to that kingdom Jesus spoke of. It invites the light of Truth into consciousness, revealing God's power and spiritual creation.

The study of the Christ Science awakens in you a spiritual understanding and a love for good that attract and draw others to you because they see the light you are finding. Science and Health says, "Heaven is not a locality, but a divine state of Mind in which all the manifestations of Mind are harmonious and immortal, because sin is not there and man is found having no righteousness of his own, but in possession of 'the mind of the Lord,' as the Scripture says" (p. 291). It is our prerogative to see that this divine Mind Science and Health speaks of is God and is our own Mind by reflection, and to see that this is immediately true.

But how does this become practical? We get new concepts of God and of the way we relate to Him. These are concepts of God as All and as completely perfect. Science and Health does not flinch from challenging traditional beliefs. It encourages the reader to think from the standpoint that God is All. This is to say that you are God's child, the expression of Him, with consequent strength and ability. This shows things from a different perspective, a spiritual one.

Wherever you are, you are in God's presence. The good you are hoping for, working for, praying for, is with you now. It is in bringing an understanding of such spiritual truths as these that Science and Health has direct and practical implications in our lives. This is how it helps and heals. The book will lead you to see that existence is not what it appears to be; that discord and suffering of whatever nature result from ignorance of God and of our relation to Him. The right, spiritual understanding of God brings regeneration and healing.

A new understanding of God does not leave you where it found you. For those truly reaching out, there's no limit. All the satellite and cable channels in the world will never plug you into what spiritual understanding opens up for you. The Internet is minuscule in comparison to the access to good you have when you go to God and find the understanding of what is within you.

All this isn't about changing anyone or anything, but about revealing what is already here. Nothing can bring the kingdom of God to anyone, for it is already "at hand" (see Mark 1:15). Truth is ever present, and is found by those whose hearts are ready for it. God's promise, as given by the prophet Jeremiah, is perpetual: "Ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. And I will be found of you, saith the Lord" (29:13, 14).

Over nine million copies of Science and Health have been sold since it was first published. In explaining divine Science, the law of God, it has consistently changed the lives of its readers, restored their health, and renewed their peace and happiness. The last hundred pages contain testimonies of healing that came about by reading the book. Among these are healings of cancer, tuberculosis, heart disease, and many other conditions. Those healed have told here how they came to see more clearly the good that is within, how they became free of fear, turmoil, and discouragement. They found God's kingdom.
