BABE - This Oscar-nominated gem is uncommonly wonderful. Babe is a little pig who wants to be a sheep dog and help on the sheep farm. His adventures make for a film that is both delightfully witty and touching. Children will enjoy the talking animals while adults will howl at the humor (watch for the singing mice). See it with the family, have a party with friends, or rent it for a date. A good time will be had by all. (G, MCA Universal)

- Terri Theiss

THE BABY-SITTERS CLUB - Adolescent trials and smiles fill this sweet film about seven enterprising girls who expand their baby-sitting business one summer. Their day camp for children is a big hit, but along with their mischievous charges the 13-year-old pals face dating, summer-school exams, discussions about illness, and the return of an absent father. Some of the subplots are not as upbeat as others, but on the whole the movie, including its boppy, alternative-rock soundtrack, is pleasant fare for the preteen-and-up crowd. Based on the series of books by Ann M. Martin. Starring Schuyler Fisk, Ellen Burstyn, and Peter Horton. (PG, Columbia)

- Kim Campbell

A WALK IN THE CLOUDS - Beautiful pastel cinematography makes this film a visual treat, but its slow-moving love story doesn't quite measure up. The romantic pair, played by Keanu Reeves and Aitana Sanchez-Gijon, meet when they take the same train - he, disillusioned with his marriage upon returning from World War II combat; she, fearfully going home pregnant and unmarried. They hatch a plan where he'll pose as her husband as she arrives at her father's vineyard estate. From this premise, the plot becomes predictable and is hindered by unconvincing performances. Directed by Alfonso Arau, who made "Like Water for Chocolate." (PG-13, 20th Century Fox)

- Judy Nichols
