Pigs Eat Plenty While Children Go to Sleep Hungry

The front-page article "Promise of Rice Aplenty for World Is Limited by Shrinking Resources," June 21, fails to mention a greater constraint on global food supplies.

Large quantities of sagricultural products that people can eat are fed to livestock, even though it takes 16 pounds of grain to put one pound of beef on a plate. No matter the source, the well-off few end up eating pounds and pounds of grain in the form of meat, while the majority are denied this most basic source of protein. I am filled with sadness when I think of how much labor by US farmers goes into filling the stomachs of cattle while children in poor nations struggle to go to sleep hungry.

Flag amendment restricts free speech

People who want to "protect the flag" from physical desecration are confusing the symbol with what is being symbolized. Putting restrictions on our precious First Amendment rights damages the most important rights of all.

Free speech protects all of our rights. If the person burning the flag owns the flag, let him burn it. That won't affect what the flag symbolizes. Those in favor of a flag amendment do not understand that the flag stands for liberty - not fear of liberty.
