WORTH NOTING ON TV

* SATURDAY

Indianapolis 500 Time Trials (ABC, Noon to 2:30 p.m., EDT): The big auto race itself will be aired on ABC May 28, but to be in it, you have to qualify, and that's what this event -- a must-see for true fans -- is all about.

It's a two-day contest, but only those there the first day are eligible to win the coveted pole position (the inside car in the front row at the start).

* SUNDAY

Indianapolis 500 Time Trials (ABC, 3-4 p.m., EDT): Conclusion.

* TUESDAY

No Time to Be a Child (PBS, 10-11 p.m.): Despite media coverage of violence in society, the reality of living with it -- especially for children -- is often not fully grasped by viewers. Now three groups (Public Television Outreach Alliance, WTVS Detroit's the Nitty Gritty Cities Group, and Bill Moyers's Public Affairs Television) offer a three-part miniseries to show what it's like and what certain young people have successfully done to overcome it.

The opener examines life in urban areas that are often like war zones. It looks through the eyes of young people. One is a teenage girl who has been shot and is in a Chicago hospital. She talks about the presence of death and destruction in her life as if it were all perfectly natural. Another teenager has left gang life and changed her life with help from a neighborhood church. Still another has rejected gang overtures and promotes peace in her neighborhood through poetry and painting.

Future shows deal with rural as well as urban areas and also consider the children who are reconstructing their lives after childhood abuse.
