Soundgarden - Superunknown (A & M Records): This Seattle group hasn't reaped the benefits of the rise of grunge music - until now. This release, their third, debuted at the top of the charts. It's their most sophisticated and accessible album yet, rising above their previous level of metal sludge to embrace a variety of styles. And for the first time, the production does their music justice. Guitarist Kim Thayil provides virtuoso guitar work, and lead vocalist Chris Cornell actually manages to produce sounds that resemble singing.
