* Career: Associate, Brown & Bain, Phoenix, 1965-74; attorney general, Arizona, 1975-78; member, President's Committee on the Accident at Three Mile Island, 1979-80; governor, Arizona, 1978-87; candidate for Democratic nomination for US president, 1988; partner, Steptoe & Johnson, Phoenix, 1988 to present.

* Personal: Married to Hattie Coons; two children.

* Assessment: Babbitt is a committed environmentalist who has won several awards from the National Wildlife Federation. His experience as Arizona governor should serve him well at Interior - a department that deals, in large part, with Western lands.
