IT was three in the morning, and I felt concern as I stood alone in the dark of our living room. Our four-year-old had wakened with another earache, and my efforts to comfort her had not been successful. Then a quiet thought became overpowering. It was the conviction that I could pray for this child as I had learned in Christian Science and that this prayer would heal the chronic earache problem completely, forever.
I realized that while I had been praying that night, I had been expecting no more than that the child would be comforted. Now I went to the kitchen table with pen and paper and decided to listen with all my heart to the voice of God (the same voice that had told me our daughter could be healed). I planned actually to write down all that I heard. I love God and I know that He is always with us and is always willing and able to bring peace and comfort when we are in need. And I knew I could trust God's pro mise of healing because I'd seen evidence of His power to heal many times in my life.
The first words I wrote down were: ``God is present and has power. He is Love and is loving us right now." I continued listening for God's Word about our daughter and her divine right to freedom from this condition. As I prayed, my anxious concern lifted and peace filled my heart. Within ten minutes the child stopped crying and went back to sleep. Although we didn't know it at the time, she had been permanently healed. She is now a teenager and has never had any problem with her ears since that night!
What happened? How can prayer, which is mental, heal problems that are physical? Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, says in her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: ``It is neither Science nor Truth which acts through blind belief, nor is it the human understanding of the divine healing Principle as manifested in Jesus, whose humble prayers were deep and conscientious protests of Truth,--of man's likeness to God and of man's unity with Truth and Love."
Christ Jesus saw the perfect man of God's creating wherever he went. He didn't let the physical senses dictate his view of mankind. His Christly consciousness always saw man as spiritual, created in God's image--upright, pure, whole, free. What he saw was the truth. Truth is an irresistible power for good in that it naturally corrects, adjusts, or eliminates what is untrue or mistaken. John's Gospel tells us that Jesus said to his followers: ``Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." His understanding of the truth of God's creation was like shining a light into the darkness of fear, disease, hardship: the light chased away the grim shadows of the darkness. Jesus said, ``I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness."
That night when our daughter had needed help, I had turned wholeheartedly to God in prayer. Prayer is like opening a door to invite in the Christ, and it is always the Christ that heals. As we invite this Christ-truth into our hearts, we find that it leads us in the way of healing. It raises consciousness to apprehend spiritual reality.
As I had listened quietly I had reasoned that because God is the Father and creator of our daughter (and of us all) and because she is made in His image--spiritual, not material--she must be like Him. And therefore, I could see, everything about her must express Him. Because God is Principle, she must be evidence of His perfect order. Because God is Mind, she must manifest His perfect peace. Because God is Soul, she must include poise and right balance.
I saw that God, Soul, includes no element of pressure, no unbalanced inside or outside forces causing conflict. I saw that no voids exist within a spiritual idea, because in Soul all substance is spiritual. I realized that no child of God's could be under pressure of any kind, because God's children live in the atmosphere of Love. They are treasured and cherished by their creator and can never be anxious or uncertain of their place.
Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health: ``Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual--neither in nor of matter,--and the body will then utter no complaints. If suffering from a belief in sickness, you will find yourself suddenly well."
In that moment I saw clearly that our daughter was God's idea, held safe in divine Mind, and entirely separate from any belief of mortal selfhood. I noticed that the house was quiet. The child's crying had subsided. It dawned on me that this is what a healing in Christian Science is all about. My ``anxious mother" thinking had yielded to the truth of man's perfect likeness to God. These newly perceived spiritual facts about God's child had completely healed my daughter.
Lift up the hands
which hang down,
and the feeble knees;
and make straight paths
for your feet,
lest that which is lame
be turned out of the way;
but let it rather be healed.
