The number of Americans filing first-time unemployment claims rose to 414,000 during the week ending Sept. 12, the Labor Department reported yesterday. It was the highest number in five weeks. Job losses from Hurricanes Andrew and Iniki were faulted.... Consumer caution held economic growth in the April-June quarter to an anemic 1.5 percent annual rate, the Commerce Department said yesterday. Analysts had estimated growth would be 1.4 percent.... Former East German spy chief Markus Wolf has been indicted on treason, bribery, and espionage charges, Germany's chief prosecutor announced yesterday.... Vickers Plc. said yesterday it would shed another 950 jobs at its Rolls-Royce Motor Cars unit. This follows British Aerospace's decision Wednesday to cut 3,000 jobs in its civil airplane business. Ford of Britain is also expected to announce further job cuts.... Thousands of Greek state employees staged 24-hour strike yesterday protesting cuts in the nu mber of civil servants and benefits.
