Isn't the solo event in synchronized swimming a contradiction in terms?

Not really. The synchronization is with the music. In the duet, of course, the swimmers must coordinate with one another as well. Beginning with the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, both the solo and duet will be replaced by a team event.
