Divine Justice - Active Today

ONE of the great movie directors, Frank Capra, made several films depicting the triumph of the common man over the apparently superior forces of corruption. In these films we can see vividly how good comes out on top in the end, even when things at first seem pretty hopeless.

Of course, the comforting sentiment of a movie, even one that points to an undying truth, can seem far from reality when innocent people suffer as a result of domineering, manipulative behavior. Yet our intuitive sense of God's goodness persuades us that such behavior, even when it's propped up by physical force or by some other condition, can't continue indefinitely. That's because it has no support from divine law, no support from the very Principle of the universe. The fact is that the one God, Princi ple, does exist and is all-powerful. And because He is omnipotent good, whatever opposes His nature will at some point yield to His law and to the reality of His just government.

In recent times the world has seen encouraging evidence of this fact in the crumbling of oppressive regimes that once seemed indomitable. That which would set up its own false system--create its own reality, so to speak--and suppress individual rights, must eventually give way to something better, as mankind perceives more clearly the spiritual nature of true existence.

The writer of Ecclesiastes affirmed, "I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it. God's work is complete, and His government is supreme. This is the spiritual reality of existence, a reality proved time and again throughout the Scriptures in the overcoming of oppression and in the healing of sin and sickness through divine power. It's a reality that's being proved today, sometimes in modest ways, as a result of prayer. Difficult circumst ances that may have seemed unalterable are being changed for the better through a perception of God's unchanging goodness.

Christ Jesus' works recorded in the Bible aren't simply miracles with no relevance to our own lives. They exemplify the power of God to correct whatever is discordant in human experience. They tell us that divine justice is infinitely more than theory; it's provable fact. Egotistic worldly thinking, however, supposes that it can suppress individual rights; that it can exalt itself and defy the divine order of things. Though it does appear sometimes to succeed, its supposed kingdom, contradicting the Bibl ical precepts that alone confer harmony, must inevitably be seen as lacking genuine authority or support.

Admittedly, it's sometimes a challenge to prove that man is governed by God, not by the misguided actions of personal will. But a knowledge of the spiritual fact, and gratitude for whatever progress mankind has made in proving that fact, can help us see the way to greater freedom for individuals as well as nations. Through prayer that reflects something of the power of the one divine Mind, God, we can play an important role in this work. As Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science , says in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, "The despotic tendencies, inherent in mortal mind and always germinating in new forms of tyranny, must be rooted out through the action of the divine mind.

In absolute truth, there is no victim or victimizer. Man, as the outcome of God, is His spiritual likeness, governed by His wisdom alone. This truth is what is really going on. It's what God has established, and what we can progressively prove.
