PUBLIC-SECTOR EMPLOYMENT GROWS SLOWLY

Although public-sector employment grew 2.7 percent in 1990 over the previous year to 18 million workers, growth in government jobs over the past 10 years has lagged behind private-sector job growth, according to the AFL-CIO's Public Employee Department.The civilian labor force grew 18.7 percent from 1980 to 1990. But employment for all levels of government grew only 13.3 percent.
