NEWTON, MASS. — The United States electronics industry recorded one of its most profitable periods in the fourth quarter of 1990, according to the Electronic Business profits index, a sampling of the performance of 17 major electronics companies. The index shows that profits for the fourth quarter climbed 76.4 percent compared to a year earlier. Profits for the entire year rose 8.3 percent.
The electronics industry benefited from last year's steady revenue growth, a weak dollar, and restructuring of the industry in 1989.
