HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE EXTENDS TO IVORY TOWERS

As millions of college students head back to campus, insurance coverage may be traveling right along with them. Most of the students' personal belongings will be covered by their parents' homeowners policies, says Barbara Taylor, the Insurance Information Institute's vice president for consumer affairs.

Typically, homeowners policies cover property stolen away from home. If the home is insured for $100,000, the contents coverage would be $50,000, and the coverage for a student away at college would be one-tenth of that, or $5,000.
