WORTH NOTING ON TV

SUNDAY Nature (PBS, 8-9 p.m.): A three-part series tracing Africa's geological fault linelaunches a new season of this worthwhile weekly program. ``The Great Rift: Footprints in the Valley'' moves all over the continent's rich landscape, offering awesome scenes of wildlife along the way. MONDAY Country Music Association Awards (CBS, 9-11 p.m.): Country songs have been ``crossing over'' into mainstream pop for years, but country artists still like to honor their own - and that's just what a roster of stars will be doing in this 23rd annual version of the event, carried live from the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tenn.

TUESDAY The Other Side of the News: Athletics and the Academics (PBS, 10-11:30 p.m.): Can studies and sports - especially big-money sports - coexist on college campuses? In this edition of the ``Media and Society Seminars,'' moderated by Fred Friendly, a nicely selected panel has a roundtable discussion of rising tensions between these two interests.

WEDNESDAY Harry Hopkins: At FDR's Side (PBS, 9-10:30 p.m.): Walter Cronkite narrates this long documentary look at one of US history's ``assistant presidents,'' who wielded huge influence - in peacetime as head of emergency relief projects during the Depression era, and in war as envoy to Churchill and Stalin.
