ARTS SCENE

THE SAN ANTONIO FESTIVAL has named Daniel Lipton as its artistic director and announced some of its plans for the sixth annual event, June 3-19. Mr. Lipton is artistic director and principal conductor of Opera Hamilton in Ontario, Canada. He said the coming festival will include the premi`ere of a new opera by Robert Xavier Rodriguez called ``The Old Majestic,'' set in the Majestic Theater in San Antonio at a time when talking pictures were replacing silent movies and vaudeville acts. Several early films starring Pola Negri will also be shown. Miss Negri was a San Antonio resident during her final years. A NEW REFERENCE WORK to be published in 1988 is ``The Oxford Companion to Canadian Theatre.'' The book, edited by Eugene Benson and Leonard Conolly, professors at the University of Guelph, will include not only biographical sketches of actors but also critical surveys of English and French drama, and articles on children's theater, radio drama, and theater architecture. Oxford University Press is the publisher. THE WORLD'S LARGEST RECORD STORE is scheduled to open this month in Boston, at Newbury Street and Massachusetts Avenue. Tower Records, America's second-largest record retail chain, will offer 39,000 square feet of records, tapes, compact discs, and videos. It will be open from 9 a.m. to midnight every day of the year.
