Sri Lanka drops plan to ease ethnic tensions

The Sri Lankan government decided Wednesday to drop proposals by President Junius Jayewardene aimed at easing tensions between the majority Sinhalese and minority Tamils, a Cabinet spokesman said, because the main Tamil group, the Tamil United Liberation Front, had rejected them.

The plan, which Mr. Jayewardene said represented the views of the majority of delegations at an all-party conference, was also opposed by the main opposition Sinhalese party and the Buddhist clergy.
