Gorbachev calls for detente, joining hands on problems

Mikhail Gorbachev, regarded as the Kremlin heir apparent, pleaded for a breakthrough to detente and East-West security Tuesday and said both power blocs should cooperate to solve world problems.

In a speech to the British Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, he said the Soviet Union is prepared to take the ''most radical measures'' in coming arms talks with the United States to limit and eventually eliminate nuclear arms.
