Proxmire raps US for seeking budget cuts amid entertaining

Sen. William Proxmire (D) of Wisconsin gave his monthly ''Golden Fleece'' award for December to the Office of Management Budget on Thursday for ''acting like Scrooge'' in proposing domestic budget cuts but playing Santa Claus when it comes to approving money for ''wining and dining.''

Senator Proxmire said that in fiscal 1984, which ended Sept. 30, 71 federal agencies spent at least $12.9 million on entertaining, with the list topped by the White House at $4.6 million and the State Department at $4.2 million.
