TV shows photo of Marcos to quash rumors of illness

In an apparent attempt to dampen rumors that President Ferdinand Marcos is seriously ill, a photograph of the President reading Wednesday's newspaper was shown on Philippines television Wednesday night.

The photograph of Mr. Marcos holding a copy of the Bulletin Today newspaper was used in a TV report on new government price-control orders.

Manila newspapers have reported that Marcos underwent major surgery last week. Presidential palace statements have said the President is well and working, but they have not specifically denied rumors that he had undergone surgery.

The TV annnouncer said Marcos ''broke into an amused smile as he noted lead stories concerning speculation about his health.''
