Six Soviet aircraft reported shot down by Afghan rebels

Afghan rebels shot down a Soviet military transport plane and five helicopter gunships, killing a Soviet general, Western diplomats said Tuesday. The development came as the Soviets stepped up military aircraft movements in and out of the airport in Kabul, the capital, and reportedly began building two new airfields along Afghanistan's sensitive border with Iran, the diplomats said.
