Bonn to monitor North sea for Warding off oil spillage

West Germany said Wednesday it will extend its territorial waters in a section of the North Sea to ward off oil disasters in one of the world's busiest shipping lanes. The government decided to extend the three-mile zone to up to 16 miles, mainly to protect the German Bight and the German North Sea coast.

In Rotterdam, meanwhile, 15 environmentalists chained two dinghies and an inflatable pontoon to the West German ship Rosemary yesterday to protest dumping of German chemicals in the North Sea. The environmental group Greenpeace said the Rosemary and its sister ship, Kathe H, dumped chemical waste every day about 25 miles off the Hook of Holland. The waste comes from West German titanium dioxide companies.
