US legislators to visit Taiwan to plan for formal trade ties
Two US congressional missions will visit Taiwan this month for talks with Nationalist leaders on trade ties, Foreign Ministry sources said Wednesday. A nine-member mission from the House of Representatives is to arrive next Monday for a two-day visit, during which it plans to examine Taiwan's economic development and its trade ties with Washington.
Another mission, led by Sen. Paul Laxalt, chairman of the Republican National Committee, is set for Nov. 17.
The United States and Taiwan cut diplomatic relations in 1979, when Washington switched its recognition to Peking. But unofficial ties, including the sale of defensive weapons to Taiwan, continue under the Taiwan Relations Act passed by Congress that year.
