Backers of Senate package on crime rescue measure

Led by Sen. Strom Thurmond (R) of South Carolina, supporters of the anticrime package proposed by President Reagan mustered a 97-to-0 vote to defeat a move that would have stripped the measure from the appropriations legislation. The motion to remove the anticrime package was made by Sen. Mark Hatfield (R) of Oregon, chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, who sought to eliminate provisions not directly related to money for federal agencies.
