Ellsworth Bunker, veteran statesman
Ellsworth Bunker, who passed on here last Thursday, was a diplomat under seven presidents and a major symbol of American involvement in the Vietnam war. Mr. Bunker was appointed ambassador to South Vietnam by President Lyndon B. Johnson in April 1967, and served during the war's most difficult years. Before his retirement from the government in 1978, he was chief US negotiator for a new Panama Canal Treaty. In 1962 he served as a special negotiator and helped avert war between the Netherlands and Indonesia over Dutch New Guinea. He was a peacemaker again in the Dominican Republic in 1965.
