Egypt reports mine is found, but probably a '73 leftover

The Egyptian military command announced Sunday that French units had discovered and detonated a mine in the Red Sea south of the Gulf of Suez. It was the first confirmation that any active mine had been found during a seven-week multinational hunt for undersea explosives. The Soviet-made mine was probably from the 1973 Arab-Israeli war and not part of an apparent effort to disrupt shipping in the waterway this summer, a French Embassy source said Monday.
