UN refugee chief in Vietnam to resettle internees in US

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Poul Hartling arrived in Vietnam last weekend for talks on the fate of thousands of Vietnamese in ''re-education camps'' who may be resettled in the United States.

A senior US State Department official said recently that Washington is nearing a decision to take the internees. They would presumably go under the Orderly Departure Program, negotiated by the UNHCR in 1979 as a humane alternative to the tragic ''boat people'' exodus.

Vietnam has complained that Washington is not taking the refugees at a quick enough peace.
