Libya formally recognizes Morocco in Western Sahara

Libya formally recognized Moroccan sovereignty over the Western Sahara by signing a treaty with Rabat and withdrew all support for guerrillas fighting for independence of the territory, the Moroccan minister of state, Ahmed Alaoui, said Tuesday.

Until Col. Muammar Qaddafi made a spectacular reconciliation visit to Morocco a year ago, Libya had provided substantial financial and military aid to Polisario Front guerrillas fighting Morocco for independence of the Western Sahara. In April of 1980 Libya officially recognized the Saharan Arab Democratic Republic proclaimed by the Polisario.
