Uruguay agrees to end 12 years of military rule
The ruling junta and three major political groups announced Saturday the end of nearly 12 years of military rule. A formal agreement among them calls for Nov. 25 elections for a president and a legislative assembly, to take office on March 1, 1985.
The Blanco Party was the only major political group to refuse to participate in the negotiations. It said it will also boycott the elections as long as its presidential candidate, Wilson Ferreira Aldunate, remains in prison. He is charged with having links with subversives and damaging the morale of the armed forces.
