Houston channel closed as oil cleanup proceeds

The Houston Ship Channel remained closed Monday as workers continued cleaning up thousands of gallons of oil that leaked from a grounded Venezuelan tanker, the Coast Guard said.

The tanker Turpial apparently lost power as it prepared to dock and ran aground Saturday night, officials said. The accident tied up traffic throughout the 58-mile channel, said Coast Guard Comdr. E. Roe, alternate captain of the Port of Houston.
