News In Brief

Capital of Kashmir put under curfew . . .

Officials imposed an indefinite curfew on the Kashmir capital of Sringagar Thursday to prevent violent protests against this week's dismissal of the state government by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. ''The situation remains tense,'' a security official said.

A planeload of paramilitary troops was airlifted to Srinagar to join security officers already deployed in the city. The curfew shut down shops and businesses , and police and paramilitary patrols checked identity cards of all passers-by.

In a related action, official sources said Indian troops guarding the disputed border between Jammu and Kashmir State and Pakistan were placed on alert after intelligence reports suggested troublemakers planned to cross the frontier to foment unrest.
