US reportedly out to buy Soviet MIGs from China

The United States is negotiating to buy 24 Soviet MIG fighters from China to teach US pilots the best way to combat MIGs in dogfights, a London newspaper reported Sunday.

In a report from Washington, the Mail said Moscow was ''furious'' about the proposed sale of MIGs to the US Navy and has warned China not to go through with it.

The Mail quoted a senior US Navy officer as saying, ''Training with actual MIGs will be invaluable. Our pilots can learn the strong and the weak points. It's like being able to practice with the enemy.''

The Soviet Union transferred MIG design plans to China in the 1950s and allowed Peking to build the plane. The newspaper did not mention the specific type of MIG being purchased or whether the planes were Soviet-made or made by the Chinese.
