NATO to enlist high-tech to help conventional arms

NATO defense ministers announced an agreement Thursday to tap new technologies to enhance conventional arms for the 1990s and identified 11 arms systems for immediate consideration.

The ministers also set national force goals for the next five years and tentatively agreed ''substantially'' to boost spending on support facilities in Europe to be used by US reinforcement troops in time of war, US Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger said.
