No proof of Sandinist arms in Salvador: US officials

The United States has failed to find proof that left-wing Nicaragua is funneling arms to El Salvador's guerrillas, American officials and military sources said Monday.

US policy in Central America is largely founded on the Reagan administration's assertion that Nicaragua is exporting revolution to its neighbors.

But according to American officials and other sources, who spoke on the condition they remain anonymous, the efforts to find proof of arms flowing into El Salvador from Nicaragua have turned up virtually nothing.

The US Central Intelligence Agency is reported to have paid more than $50 million to Nicaraguan rebels fighting to topple Nicaragua's Sandinist government.
