Gains against Viet troops claimed on 2 border fronts

Chinese troops killed or wounded ''large numbers'' of Vietnamese soldiers and destroyed ''several hundred'' Vietnamese military installations during intensified border clashes, the official Xinhua news agency said Thursday. The report said that in the past few days Chinese frontier guards have continued to use artillery fire to repel ''armed provocations'' by Vietnamese forces.

Meanwhile, Khmer Rouge guerrillas have recaptured a strategic base from Vietnamese forces after five days of fighting in western Kampuchea, Khmer Rouge and Thai military sources said Thursday. They told reporters in the Thai border town of Aranyaprathet that the base at Tamnak Ched, 12 miles inside Kampuchea in Battambang Province, was retaken last Monday.
