'Pizza Connection' arrests called biggest bust ever

Hundreds of federal agents have smashed the ''Pizza Connection'' - a major heroin ring run by organized crime that used pizza parlors across New York and the Middle West as fronts for importing the illicit drug. It was the biggest drug operation ever, authorities said.

The arrests of 25 people involved in the ring that brought heroin worth $1.6 billion into the United States over the past five years were announced here Monday by Attorney General William French Smith and FBI Director William H. Webster. Thirty-one people were indicted.

Among those arrested was Italy's most-wanted criminal, reputed Mafia leader Gaetano Badalamenti.
