Nicaraguan elections set for Nov. 4, leader says

In a mass outdoor rally Tuesday Nicaraguan junta coordinator Daniel Ortega Saavedra announced that elections would be held Nov. 4, Monitor correspondent Dennis Volman reports.

Mr. Ortega also said the voting age would be lowered to 16. The move is certain to be controversial, since the 16-to-18 age group is heavily pro-Sandinista.

Ortega said that the opposition will have access to television and that press censorship, already eased, will almost be lifted. He did not announce when this would occur, however.
