Bangkok, Thailand — US envoy goes to Hanoi to discuss 2,500 MIAs
Assistant Secretary of Defense Richard Armitage left Saturday for Hanoi to discuss the status of missing American servicemen. He is the highest-ranking US defense official to visit Hanoi since the Vietnam War.
The visit is a result of hints by Indochinese countries that they might step up efforts to account for about 2,500 Americans listed as missing in action (MIA) since the war.
Bob Shields, a Defense Department spokesman in Washington, would not give details of the visit.
The four-member group also includes Ann Mills Griffiths, outspoken executive secretary of the private American League of Families.
