Mondale wins favor of Speaker O'Neill

House Speaker Thomas O'Neill, the country's highest-ranking Democrat, endorsed Walter Mondale for president Wednesday, saying ''he will bring greatness to the American presidency.''

Speaker O'Neill, breaking with his own tradition of neutrality in Democratic presidential contests, told reporters Mr. Mondale is the best man for the job, ''and I will do all in my power to make sure that Walter Mondale is elected president of the United States.''
