US officials warn Europe not to curb farm imports

US officials are threatening to restrict imports of European food products if Common Market countries curb their annual purchases of $5 billion in US farm products, such as soybean oil and livestock feeds.

Speaking at a Senate Finance Committee hearing Monday, Sen. Charles Percy, (R) of Illinois, said the US did not want a trade war with its European allies, but added the US should make lists of European products that can become retaliation targets. Administration officials said such a list was being compiled.
