Pope visits Lutherans, calls for Christian unity

Pope John Paul II, in the first papal visit to a Lutheran church, Sunday urged Catholics and Lutherans to put aside the distrust of the past and strive for full Christian unity. The visit to the Lutheran Church of Rome, during the 500th anniversary year of the birth of Martin Luther, was seen as an unprecedented gesture of reconciliation toward Lutherans.
