Shultz greets peace moves in Nicaragua - if genuine
Secretary of State George Shultz said Monday he welcomes Nicaragua's peace gestures, including its promise of elections and safe conduct for US-backed rebels, if the gestures are genuine.
His statement was the most positive US response so far to a series of Nicaraguan peace gestures.
But a rebel spokesman based in Honduras said the latest gestures were only attempts by the Nicaraguan government to stall in the face of military pressure from anti-Sandinista forces.
