Classical American Festival. Works by Bernstein, Schuman, Ives, Ruggeri, Copland, Barber, Cowell. Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Lukas Foss, conductor (Pro Arte digital PAD 102). - This surprising release incorporates some of the most beloved American works - Copland's ''Fanfare for the Common Man,'' Bernstein's ''Candide'' overture, with some less-often-encountered Schuman and Cowell, and a contemporary piece by Roger Ruggeri. Foss has programmed it well, and the album emerges as a breath of familiar as well as fresh air. It is handsomely recorded, and very well played. The Milwaukee is not an orchestra one encounters often on records, and on the basis of this release, I think that oversight should be rectified soon.
