Envoy's Damascus visit follows anti-US threats

US special envoy to the Middle East Donald Rumsfeld arrived here Sunday for talks with Foreign Minister Abdel-Halim Khaddam. Rumsfled's arrival in the Syrian capital followed comments by Syrian Defense Minister Maj. Gen. Mustafa Tlas that his forces were prepared to launch suicide attacks against US warships and had missiles that could hit anywhere in Israel.

Speaking in an interview with the Beirut-based pro-Libyan magazine Al-Kifah Al-Arabi (Arab Struggle), Major General Mustafa said: ''When the Americans attack us we will respond with all suitable means. We have pilots who are ready to launch suicide missions over American warships.''

He also revealed in the interview that Syria possessed ground-to-ground missiles with a range of 180 miles and could strike deep inside Israel.
